CHAT WITH ALLAN JACOBSEN

Our chat guest Tuesday night, July 20th, is comic book writer and animation director, Allan Jacobsen.

After a brief stint as a fetus, Allan Jacobsen was born in the town of Oyster Bay, Long Island at the ripe old age of infant. He lived there for many years until he moved. He continues to move at irregular intervals, mostly to prevent cramping.
In 1996 Jacobsen relocated to Los Angeles in a desperate attempt to move closer to the sun. This accomplished, he began seeking employment in the field of animation. With only three months of savings, a battered Ford Escort, and no prior experience or knowledge of animation, the blissfully ignorant Jacobsen set out to conquer Hollywood. Within his first week in LA, Jacobsen received two job offers. Not being particularly greedy or schizophrenic, he chose one.

With determination, dedication, and a soopa-sized portion of good fortune, Jacobsen wended his way through the ranks, becoming an Assistant Director during his first season of employment. The following year, Jacobsen submitted an illustrated story entitled "Why I should be a Director" to his employers. This absurd ploy actually worked, and Jacobsen was tossed unceremoniously to the top of the heap.

Jacobsen continues to work as a Director for the Fox primetime animated series "King Of The Hill." <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://imdb.com/title/tt0118375/">http://imdb.com/title/tt0118375/</a><!-- m --> A bunch of boring stuff followed. Some work as an astronaut, and later as an international spy, but none of it was very fulfilling.

After years of creative frustration, and due largely to the prodding and encouragement of his wife, Jacobsen ultimately realized what his friends and family had apparently known for years. Writing was his passion.

During a brief two-month hiatus from animation Jacobsen hurriedly produced four spec scripts in varied genres (Horror, Comedy, Paramilitary, Young Female) and submitted them to Marvel Comics. Three of the four were planned as ongoing series, while the fourth was written as a one-shot horror piece.

Two weeks later, and to the would-be writer's surprise, Marvel asked that one of these scripts to be developed into an ongoing series. Of course, it was the horror story that they wanted to see more of. A brief eternity of indecision, terror and depression followed. Fortunately, it only lasted one weekend. The project quickly took on a life of its own, and remains one of Jacobsen's personal favorites.

Unfortunately, the project was subsequently shelved due to an editorial shift, but was replaced some months later with the current series "The New Invaders." In addition to the "New Invaders" Jacobsen recently wrote an issue of "Spider-Man Unlimited" and is currently adapting a series of popular children's books for animation.
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.marvel.com/catalog/listing.htm?writer=Allan%20Jacobsen">http://www.marvel.com/catalog/listing.h ... 20Jacobsen</a><!-- m --> For an interview regarding the New Invaders: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.geocities.com/secondstringsanctuary/interview.html">http://www.geocities.com/secondstringsa ... rview.html</a><!-- m -->

Jacobsen's plans for world domination have been set aside until such a time as "The New Invaders" is cancelled. At thirty-four, he continues to divide his time between writing, directing, raising two children (Garrett - three years and Gage - five months), and courting his wife and best friend Kristen. Sometimes he watches television, but not very much.

This month's upload is going slowly. The Chat Transcript with Allan Jacobsen is now up for everyone to read. Nice tidbits on Invaders, Avengers and how to break into comics in there.

Also props and credit to Local for hipping me to where all the news is for this month's Paper Cuts news column.

When the full new issue is completely up - I'll let folks here know first. :-)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our chat guest Tuesday night is comic book writer and artist Todd Nauck. <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.toddnauck.com">http://www.toddnauck.com</a><!-- m -->
Todd has always had a love for drawing and superheroes. His earliest memories are of drawing Bert and Ernie, and hamburgers. Batman, Spider-Man and Superman toys and clothing were always found around the house.
Todd loved creating his own characters but did not get into collecting comics until the eighth grade. A year later, he decided he wanted to draw comics for a living. After graduating high school, Todd took his portfolio to comic book conventions where he received several brutal critiques. Shortly after, he enrolled at the Art Institute of Dallas. After completing his education, Todd started sending out his samples to all of the major companies. In between submissions, he would write, draw, and letter a series of homemade mini comics featuring his own characters. These mini comics were printed from a copy machine, and would soon become very important.
Todd then went on to draw for Extreme Studios, Marvel and DC Comics. After doing fill-in work on Sensational Spider-Man and Legion of Super-Heroes, he was given the honor of helping launch a new series starring the DC's teen heroes: Young Justice. Todd has been with the title for the entire run of fifty-five issues, for which is he is probably best known.
The mini-comics were reborn recently in a series from Image called WildGuard: Casting Call that Todd both wrote and illustrated, in which the reality TV concept is brought to comics. WildGuard is a made-for-TV superteam. An "American Idol" for superheroes, hundreds of heroes converge to try out for this reality TV show. Yet, only five would be chosen to fill WildGuard's roster. Casting the team members was the driving force to the six-issue mini-series. Readers were invited to <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.wildguard.com">http://www.wildguard.com</a><!-- m --> where they could view mini-profiles on forty-five different heroes. Fans were able to vote for the character they wanted on the team and try to guess whom the final five would be.
Since the mini-series this past year, there are now the weekly WildGuard web strips at: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.wildguard.com">http://www.wildguard.com</a><!-- m --> and the new upcoming one-shot WildGuard: Firepower coming in December.
Other powers and abilities: Todd has a fairly good photographic memory generally retaining knowledge of TV, comics, music, movies, and other useless trivia. He is quick on the draw and can pencil two to three comic book pages in a day. He has a complete collection of Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes and is developing an uncanny recall for episode details and quotes. Todd can also fly and has hydro-powered arms. Though due to the lack of practice he is not proficient in these last two abilities. And then there's his appearance as a contestant on PAX TV's On The Cover game show on November 24th. The guy gets around.
Please come out for an exciting and entertaining evening and chat with writer/artist Todd Nauck. <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.toddnauck.com">http://www.toddnauck.com</a><!-- m -->
I just wanted to let you Glenn, and anyone else that may be interested, know that I will be attending another Heroclix tournament tomorrow evening, and I plan to write another report based on the events of the night. It should be interesting, because the tournament consists of relatively high point total teams, culminating in the top 6 players facing off against Galactus in what is known as the "Devourer of Worlds" Heroclix scenario.
Of coarse, there will be plenty of fun details and hopefully some more good stories to be told after the tournament tomorrow night.
I look forward to the new article, Thor, thanks. :-)
I have been meaning to tell you that I got quite a bit of good feedback on your first HeroClix article. Surprisingly not from comics or gaming people, but folks who thought it was just a great tale and some quality writing.
So, just in case I ever do win the lottery and start a publishing company - you're hired, dude.
Our chat guest Friday night is writer, artist and creator of "Tabloia Weekly Magazine," Chris Wisnia. <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.tabloia.com">http://www.tabloia.com</a><!-- m -->
Chris Wisnia is a thirty-two year-old resident of sunny Davis, California, where he teaches private guitar lessons by day and writes and draws comics in his spare time. His self-published book, "Tabloia Weekly Magazine," is an anthology of horror, film noir, satire, and social commentary.
The book's main story, "The Lump," surrounds the discovery of severed body parts on the freeway. The reader will meet tattoo artists, coroners, private investigators, drug dealers, a hand-transplant specialist, and homicide detectives as they attempt to unravel the mystery.
The book also features "Dr. DeBunko, Debunker of the Supernatural." Dr. Michael Shermer, publisher of "Skeptic Magazine," director of the Skeptics Society, and author of "Why People Believe Weird Things" said Dr. DeBunko is "...the coolest, hippest thing to hit skepticism since Lisa Simpson [read] Jr. Skeptic magazine (when Homer had his alien abduction experience)."
The other features are the Mickey Spillane-inspired Dick Hammer: Conservative Republican Private Investigator, and "Doris Danger Seeks...Where Giant Monsters Creep and Stomp," a retro King Kong-style giant monster story inked by Dick Ayers. Mr. Ayers is a living legend in the comics industry whose work includes classic issues of the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, Captain America, The Avengers, and more.
Each issue contains pin-ups by some of the biggest names in the comics industry, including Mike Allred, Sam Kieth, Gene Colan, Los Bros Hernandez, Russ Heath, Bill Sienkiewicz, Ryan Sook, Thomas Yeates, Irwin Hasen, Steve Rude, John Severin, Ramona Fradon, Tony Millionaire, and more.
Chris will also be contributing his artwork to Sam Kieth's Ojo (Oni Press), beginning with issue #2. He and Tabloia have interviews and reviews posted at the following sites:
